Super Bowl!

The amount of money spent for one thirty second commercial during the Super Bowl is ridiculous. Advertisers spent about $3 million dollars for that time amount of time. Unfortunately, most of those advertisers aren't showing the viewers healthy things. A majority of the ads are focused on beer, fast food, and other junk foods. Why would the Super Bowl allow the advertisers to show off these commercials?

My honest opinion- They want money. That's really all the business of media is about, and they do not care what they showing to their viewers. The people who run the Super Bowl do not really care what's being showed during the commercial breaks, because they already made 3 million dollars for that thirty second slot. The advertisers do not care how the ads effect the viewers. They are only worried about how much of the viewers' money is going in their pockets.

VOTE!

Voting is a very, very important part of being a citizen in the United States. Americans should be thankful that we have the ability to have a say in who is going to lead our country. There are many other countries that do not have that right, and I'm sure they wished they were as lucky as we are. We need to take advantage of this privilege!

I was not able to vote in the last presidential election. If I was old enough to vote, I'm not sure who I would have voted for. Politics have never been my cup of tea. I try to get involved by knowing the issues, but I just can't get interested in them. Also, a lot of the things they discuss, like the economy, do not make sense to me. Honestly, when the candidates talked about some issues it sounded like those cartoons that say "womp womp" when they talk to me. One thing I do promise is that when the next election comes around I will be ready and prepared. I'll do my research, and I will vote. Something many Americans fail to do these days.

Character

What's something that is plastered on every magazine cover and shown on every television channel? The answer to this easy question is: Image. Walk through a grocery store or flip through your channels at home, and you will see exactly what I'm talking about. You can't get away from it, and sadly, the importance of image has made it's way to the White House.

A President's morals and beliefs are no longer the most important thing when running for office. Their style, the way they walk, and their smile have grown to be an important issue now, too. It's sad that Americans are worried about making sure their president is nice to look at. I understand that appearance is important, but to me, the most important thing is their goals, beliefs, and morals. In all honesty, Americans probably wouldn't vote a presidential candidate into office if he were to be shown wearing clothes from Wal-Mart. We have been shown what a President "needs" to look like, and we all know that we will fail to change that stereotype. My honest opinion: We need to start worrying about what the President says he's going to do for US rather than the brand of suit he's wearing.

Broke? Download.

Yes, I have downloaded music illegally. Honestly, how many teens haven't downloaded music illegally? A survey even stated that more than half of college students download music or movies off the web. What does the world expect from poor kids? A CD at the store may be fifteen bucks, but that could be used for gas, food, or paying a bill.

One reason why I have downloaded music illegally is because I will only like one song from a CD. I don't want to waste my money on a CD for just that one song when I could get it for free. Another reason why I have downloaded music illegally is because I have no money to buy a CD or use iTunes. I have no job, and my mother isn't the type to just randomly give me money for music.

I knew it was illegal to download music, but I never knew how serious the consequences are. Jammie Thomas was ordered to pay about $9,250.00 for each 24 songs she had downloaded. That is absolutely ridiculous. I'm not saying it's ridiculous that she had to pay that amount, but that each song she had to pay that much. After reading that I probably will never download illegally in fear of getting caught.

Artists, music producers, and the record labels need to make money. They aren't making money if we are all just sitting here on LimeWire downloading songs illegally. We are lowering the chances of new talent being recognized! The music industry could get fed up with it and stop giving us music to listen to! And, maybe that's what they should do. Teach these kids a lesson.

I know, I'm contradicting myself a lot. I just don't know where I really stand in this topic. I think it is wrong that we are basically stealing from the music industry. However, I understand why some teens, like myself, illegally download music.

bruised knees

Shows are the older generation would consider concerts. Shows can be just one local band at a coffee shop or a bunch of bands at a venue in the cities. I've gone to too many in my teen years. I've had my fair share of bruises that I consider my battle wounds. Moshing is a major factor at shows. If someone was planning on attending a show with no knowledge of what it was, I would tell them to wear a padded suit.

My music selection did vary as a teen, but for the most part, I listened to bands screaming their lyrics. My generation calls this type of music "screamo". A lot of kids my age listened to this type of music, but rap was very popular, too. The kids that did listen to other types of music weren't very nice to people, like me, who listened to the more hardcore music. Parents weren't all that welcoming of it, either.

Similar to most teens, I went through depression. The music I listened to had lyrics that consisted of suicide, depression, and many other sad topics. Now, I understand why mother thought my choice of music was the cause of my depression. It wasn't, but with the lyrics it's understandable why a person, especially a mother, would think that. Other teens that weren't into the same type of music would call us "emo". Emo is short for emotional, and it's meant to be an insult. Many friends of mine did take that to heart, but I didn't care. I would always say, "I would rather be "emo" than heartless". I haven't changed.

My mother wasn't the only parent hating on the music. My best friend in middle school had to lie to her mother just to go to shows. Her mother thought that the music and shows were for devil worship. However, that is not true. Yes, there are many bands with atheist members and lyrics that talk highly of the devil. However, none of the shows my friend went to involved any devil worship. Honestly, most of the shows we went to consisted of bands with members devoted to God. There were some teens whose parents thought that shows were full of drugs and alcohol. At first, my mother was one of them. I had to explain to her that there are bars in the venues, but they do not serve alcohol during sixteen plus shows. I'm sure sometimes they did, but I never let my mom know that.

I grew out of that phase of my life, and honestly, I'm very thankful I did. I don't regret the money I blew going to the shows, the bruises, or how many times things of mine that got broken while moshing. During that time, I was just looking for a place to fit in. I was trying to find some place in the world where I was welcomed. I was being a teen. I found myself, and now, I have no need to just squeeze into anywhere in the world. To this day, I do still listen to some of those old songs. They always bring back some good times.
